What a PDF-level paper formatter can fix
Once a paper is exported, some formatting problems are easier to fix on the PDF than by reopening the source document.

Page size and numbering rules by venue
The two settings most often fixed at the PDF stage differ by venue.
- APA student papers: US Letter, page number top right on every page including the title page
- IEEE conference papers: Letter or A4, no page numbers at all
- Theses: Letter or A4 with Roman numerals in the front matter and Arabic numbers from chapter 1
- Journals: usually continuous Arabic numbering, sometimes with line numbers for review
